How our bathroom fitting process works in Croydon: survey, quote, install, handover
Every bathroom we fit in Croydon runs through the same four stages. We survey your room for free, give you an itemised written quote, install with our own fitters and certified trades under one lead fitter, and hand over with certificates, a snag list and our workmanship guarantee. This page sets out what happens at each stage and who is responsible.
The process in five steps
Nothing is agreed until you accept a written quote, and nothing changes after that without your written approval. Each step below says what you do and what we do, so there is no stage where responsibility is unclear.
Tell us about the project
Use the free survey form to give your full postcode, the type of work, your property type, who is supplying the products, your timescale and when we can visit.
We survey the room, free
A surveyor visits at the agreed time, measures the room, traces the water, waste and electrical runs, checks water pressure and access, and talks through what you want and what you have already chosen. No reputable bathroom fitter prices a full bathroom from a form, and neither do we.
You receive an itemised quote
Every work item is marked as included, excluded or subject to survey. Products are listed by model number, whether you or we supply them. VAT, the programme, payment stages and our guarantee are all in the document.
We install
One lead fitter runs the job from strip-out to handover and is on site each day. Plumbing, tiling, carpentry and plastering are done by our fitters, electrical work by our registered electrician, gas work by our Gas Safe registered engineer.
We hand over and you sign off
We test everything, walk the room with you, write the snag list with dates, and hand over certificates, warranties and the guarantee. The final payment is due once the snag list is cleared.
What the survey covers: scope, site and responsibility
The survey answers the three questions that decide the quote. Scope is what changes and who supplies it; site is what the room will let us do and what cannot be seen until strip-out; responsibility is who certifies, who notifies Building Control and who handles changes. A form cannot answer these, which is why the visit is free and comes before any price.
- Scope: like-for-like replacement, a new layout, a bath to shower conversion, a wet room, tiling only, supply and fit or fit only.
- Site: property type and age, which floor the bathroom is on, whether it is the only bathroom, access and parking, floor construction, pipework condition, water pressure and the ventilation route.
- Responsibility: which electrical and gas work your job involves, whether Building Control notification applies, and whether the freeholder's consent is needed in a flat.
Who does what
The clearest way to avoid confusion later is to know who is responsible for each part of the job before anyone starts. On our jobs, the answer in almost every row is us.
| Stage | You | Bathroom Fitters Croydon | Building Control and registers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Describing the job | Give an honest brief, postcode and timescale | Book the survey at a time that suits you | Not involved |
| Survey and quote | Show us the room, share product choices, ask what is excluded | Survey for free, itemise the quote, state the programme and payment stages | Not involved |
| Contract and payment | Accept the quote in writing, pay a deposit and stage payments as work completes | Confirm start date, order products, arrange skip permits and bay suspensions | Not involved |
| The work | Approve any changes in writing before they are done | Carry out all trades under one lead fitter; keep the toilet usable overnight wherever the layout allows | Notifiable electrical work certified by our registered electrician; building notices through Croydon Council where they apply |
| Handover | Walk the room with us and sign off the snag list | Test, hand over certificates, warranties, guarantee and photographs of concealed work | Certificates evidence compliance for the parts they cover |
| After completion | Call us if anything we fitted fails | Come back under our written workmanship guarantee; handle manufacturer claims on products we supplied | Gas Safe Register and competent person register confirm our registrations |
Payment stages and changes
We never ask for the full price upfront. A deposit secures the start date and covers product orders where we are supplying; stage payments follow completed work, and the final payment is due after the snag list is cleared. The exact stages are written into the quote.
If something changes once work has started, whether you change your mind about a tile or we find a rotten floor under the bath, we price the change in writing and do nothing until you approve it. Subject-to-survey items in the quote carry a stated rate or provisional sum for exactly this reason.
What to have ready before the survey
A few minutes of preparation makes the survey more useful and the quote faster. You do not need drawings; you need a clear description of the room and what you want to change.
- Your full postcode and property type (flat, terrace, semi, detached, bungalow)
- Which floor the bathroom is on and whether there is a room below it
- What you want to keep, replace or move (bath, shower, toilet, basin, radiator)
- Whether you will supply products yourself or want supply and fit
- Products already chosen, with model numbers
- Rough timescale and when a daytime visit suits you
- Any known issues: previous leaks, damp patches, a boiler or electrics due for work
Frequently asked questions
Is the survey really free?
Yes. The home visit and the itemised quote are free, with no obligation. Design work for full installations and renovations is included; where you want detailed drawings for a more complex project, the quote states any charge before you agree to it.
How long after the survey do I get the quote?
That depends on the job; a like-for-like refit is quicker to price than a reconfiguration with products still to confirm. We tell you at the survey when to expect it.
What should I expect from hiring a bathroom fitter?
A visit before a firm price, a written itemised quote, a start and finish date, a stage payment plan and a named person running the job. That is what we provide, and the bathroom installation page explains the sequence in detail.
Who is my contract with?
With Bathroom Fitters Croydon. We quote, agree terms, do the work and are responsible for it under the contract, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and our workmanship guarantee. Subcontracted specialists work under our contract, not a separate one with you.
Can I use you for a small job or a specific district?
Yes. We take on cloakrooms, tiling, shower replacements and conversions as well as full refits, and we cover the whole borough from Thornton Heath to Coulsdon; see the areas we cover.
What if something goes wrong after the work is finished?
Call us. Anything we fitted is covered by the workmanship guarantee; anything we supplied is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, which we handle for you. Our about page sets out the guarantee terms, our insurance and our registrations.
